Overview: Ahrefs alternatives

SE Ranking Core is the strongest Ahrefs alternative for a small agency at the entry price. It costs $129 per month monthly, the same as Ahrefs Lite, but publishes 10 projects against Ahrefs Lite's five and 2,000 keywords per day against 750. On annual billing it is $103.20 per month, or $1,238.40 across a year, which is $20.64 per client across five clients and $51.60 less per year than Ahrefs Lite.

This guide is for small agencies, consultants and compact in-house teams looking at Ahrefs alternatives. It prices three options against Ahrefs' own entry plan in a named five-client scenario, then shows where the arithmetic stops applying. Ahrefs, Semrush and Moz Pro figures were verified on their own pricing pages on 11 October 2026, and the SE Ranking figures were verified on 13 October 2026.

How we chose

The comparison tests annual cost, published capacity, included seats, project terms, billing commitment and switching risk. The units are not interchangeable: Ahrefs publishes tracked keywords and projects, SE Ranking publishes projects and daily keyword tracking, and Semrush publishes websites and daily keywords. A cheaper plan is not automatically an equivalent one.

Every price and limit comes from the vendor's own pricing page, captured on the dates above. Annual figures use the vendor's displayed monthly equivalent where it publishes one, with the annual total calculated from the published amount. Where a vendor publishes only a starting figure for extra seats, the team totals in this guide are planning floors rather than quotations.

On commercial relationships, stated plainly. We hold an affiliate relationship with SE Ranking and none with Ahrefs, Semrush or Moz Pro. That relationship does not change any figure in this guide, all of which come from the vendors' own pricing pages. It is also why the recommendation below is argued on published capacity rather than on price alone, and why each alternative is given the case against it.

What you are leaving: Ahrefs

Best for staying in the same data set Ahrefs Lite at $129/month

Ahrefs Lite is the plan most small agencies hold. It costs $129 per month, or $1,290 across a year displayed as $108 per month, and publishes five projects, six months of historical data, 750 tracked keywords, 1,000 credits per user and one included user, with up to two more users at $40 per month each. API and MCP access are listed.

Standard is $249 per month, or $2,490 yearly displayed as $208, and raises the allowance to 20 projects, two years of historical data, 2,000 tracked keywords, 10 tracked AI prompts, 500,000 crawl credits and unlimited credits per user, with up to five more users at $60 per month each. Advanced is $449 per month, or $4,490 yearly displayed as $374, with 50 projects, five years of historical data, 5,000 tracked keywords, 20 tracked AI prompts and 1,500,000 crawl credits. Ahrefs states that paying annually saves up to 17%.

Two published terms matter more than the feature list for an agency. The first is the project count: five on Lite, which is where the five-client scenario starts biting, because a client with two sites consumes two slots. The second is the ownership rule, which is one of the genuine reasons agencies stay. Ahrefs publishes unverified-ownership projects, so a site can be tracked without the client granting access or adding a verification file. That matters on prospect research and on accounts where the client controls the DNS, and no other vendor in this comparison publishes an equivalent term in the same words.

Ahrefs' weakness for a small agency is the shape of its ladder rather than its entry price. Lite's five projects and 750 tracked keywords are narrower than SE Ranking Core at the same monthly price, and the next step is Standard at $249 per month, a 93 per cent increase, before any extra seats. An agency with six or seven client sites faces that step, not a small overage.

SE Ranking

Best for entry-level capacity per client SE Ranking Core at $103.20/month annually

SE Ranking Core is the closest thing to a like-for-like improvement on Ahrefs Lite. It costs the same $129 per month on monthly billing, and $103.20 per month on annual billing, which is $1,238.40 across a year. It publishes 10 projects and one manager seat, 2,000 keywords and 100 prompts to track daily, five domains in GEO research, 250,000 audit pages per month, and 25,000 API credits per month with MCP access.

Set against Ahrefs Lite in the five-client scenario, that is the same monthly price for double the projects and a larger daily keyword allowance, and on annual billing it is the lower bill as well.

Growth is $279 per month or $223.20 per month annually, or $2,678.40 across a year, with 30 projects, three manager seats, 5,000 keywords and 250 prompts daily, 15 GEO domains and 2,000,000 audit pages per month. Extra manager seats are published from $16, against $40 per extra user on Ahrefs Lite.

The case against Core has two parts, and both belong in the budget. There is no self-serve tier between 10 projects and 30, so an agency with 11 or 12 client sites has to choose between expansion pricing and a plan carrying capacity it will not use. SE Ranking also states that only one active session is allowed at a time, does not recommend sharing a login, bills annual plans upfront, and treats payments as non-refundable except where the service was not delivered as promised.

The project term is the honest caveat. SE Ranking publishes 10 projects, and Ahrefs publishes five unverified-ownership projects. An agency that tracks client sites without access should confirm SE Ranking's verification requirement for its own workload before switching, because the two terms are not written the same way.

Semrush

Best for research depth Semrush SEO at $117.33/month annually

Semrush SEO is $139 per month or $117.33 per month on annual billing, which is $1,407.96 across a year, and publishes five websites and 500 keywords per day. Against Ahrefs Lite it costs $117.96 more per year for the same five-property ceiling and a smaller daily keyword allowance, so the case for it is the depth of its research data and the breadth of the surrounding product rather than entry economics.

Starter is $199 per month or $165.17 monthly annually, or $1,982.04 across a year, and keeps the same five websites and 500 keywords while adding AI visibility with 50 prompts per day and MCP access. Pro+ is $299 per month or $248.17 monthly annually, with 15 websites and 1,500 keywords per day, and it is the published answer for an agency that has outgrown five properties. Additional users start from $45 per month.

The practical read for an agency leaving Ahrefs is that Semrush is the option to choose when the research workflow is the reason for the move, not when the bill is. An agency that wants a lower annual total than Ahrefs Lite will not find it here, and an agency that wants AI visibility at the entry price has to reach Starter at $1,982.04 per year.

A two-person Northstar Search team on Semrush SEO pays a planning floor of $297.33 per month across five people after four additional users, or $3,567.96 yearly. SE Ranking Core with four seats is $193 per month, or $2,316 yearly, which is the lower figure by a wide margin, and Ahrefs requires Standard with four annual seats at $600, making $4,890 yearly.

Moz Pro

Best for two included seats Moz Pro Medium at $143/month annually

Moz Pro Standard is the cheapest single plan in this comparison at $99 per month or $79 per month annually, or $948 across a year. It is also the wrong plan for a five-client agency, because it publishes three sites and one user. That is the trap this category sets: the lowest headline price is usually attached to a plan that cannot hold the portfolio.

Medium is the plan that fits five clients. It is $179 per month or $143 per month annually, or $1,716 across a year, and publishes 10 sites, 1,500 tracked keywords and two users included. Large is $299 per month or $239 monthly annually, or $2,868 across a year, with 25 sites, 3,000 tracked keywords and three users. Extra seats cost $49 per month on any level.

Compared with Ahrefs Lite, Medium costs $426 more per year and carries a lower tracked-keyword figure, but it includes a second seat, which neither Ahrefs Lite nor SE Ranking Core does at the entry price. For a two-person agency that does not want to price an additional seat, that inclusion is the reason to look at Moz rather than the keyword allowance.

Moz also publishes free standalone Domain Analysis, Keyword Explorer and Link Explorer tools and a trial on Medium, which are useful for evaluating the workflow without committing.

Moz Pro Medium10 sites2 users$491,500 tracked

The two tables have to be read together, because the cheapest annual total and the widest allowance are not always the same plan. Moz Pro Standard at $948 per year is the lowest figure in the category and cannot serve five clients at all with three published sites. SE Ranking Core at $1,238.40 is the lowest total that can serve them, and it carries the widest entry project allowance of the four.

Ahrefs Lite and SE Ranking Core tie on the monthly price at $25.80 per client. The tie breaks on annual billing, where SE Ranking is $51.60 lower across the year, and on capacity, where SE Ranking publishes double the projects. An agency that values the Ahrefs data set and its unverified-ownership project term enough to stay is making a defensible choice, but it is paying for data rather than for capacity.

The seat and billing traps

The entry plans do not include a team. SE Ranking Core includes one manager seat, with extra seats from $16. Ahrefs Lite includes one user, with up to two more at $40 each. Semrush lists additional users from $45. Moz Pro Medium is the exception in this comparison, including two users. A two-person agency should price the second seat before comparing headline prices, because $129 becomes $145 on SE Ranking Core and $169 on Ahrefs Lite.

Annual billing is where the order changes. SE Ranking Core's $103.20 and Semrush's $117.33 are annual-billing monthly equivalents, not month-to-month charges. Ahrefs displays $108 per month against a stated $1,290 annual charge, and Moz's $143 is a yearly-billing equivalent. On monthly billing SE Ranking Core and Ahrefs Lite are identical at $129, so the annual commitment is doing the work in the comparison.

Project terms are not written the same way. Ahrefs publishes five unverified-ownership projects on Lite and unlimited verified-ownership projects on the full plan. SE Ranking publishes 10 projects on Core. Those are different promises, and an agency that tracks client sites without verification access should confirm what each vendor requires before treating the counts as interchangeable.

Keyword units differ. Ahrefs Lite publishes 750 tracked keywords, SE Ranking Core publishes 2,000 keywords per day, Semrush SEO publishes 500 keywords per day and Moz Medium publishes 1,500 tracked keywords. A daily figure and a tracked figure are different measurement systems, so the numbers should be matched against the actual reporting cadence rather than read as a ranking.

Read the ladder, not the entry price. Ahrefs steps from $129 to $249 per month between Lite and Standard, SE Ranking steps from $129 to $279 between Core and Growth, Semrush steps from $139 to $299 between SEO and Pro+, and Moz steps from $99 to $179 between Standard and Medium. In every case the step is larger than the entry price, so the entry price only holds if the published entry allowance holds.

Who should not buy this

Do not switch away from Ahrefs to save money on monthly billing alone. SE Ranking Core and Ahrefs Lite are both $129 per month, so the saving only exists on an annual commitment, and it is $51.60 across the year at that.

Do not choose Moz Pro Standard for a five-client agency, and do not choose it because it is the cheapest plan in this comparison. Three published sites cannot hold five client websites, so the real Moz entry point here is Medium at $1,716 per year.

Do not choose SE Ranking Core if two people must work in the account and a $16 seat has not been budgeted, and do not choose it for 11 or 12 client sites, because the next published tier carries 30.

Do not treat the free and trial routes as delivery plans. Moz publishes free standalone research tools and a trial on Medium, and SE Ranking publishes a 14-day trial with no credit card covering 10 projects, 750 tracked keywords per day and 20 AI prompts per day. Those are evaluation routes.

Finally, do not accept a comparison that quotes only the headline price. In this category the three figures that decide the bill are the project or website allowance, the number of people who need a seat, and whether the agency is paying monthly or annually.

Our verdict

Choose SE Ranking Core when the goal is to spend less than Ahrefs Lite on an annual commitment without losing capacity. It is $103.20 per month annually, $1,238.40 across the year, $20.64 per client in the five-client scenario and $51.60 below Ahrefs Lite. It publishes 10 projects and 2,000 keywords per day against Ahrefs Lite's five projects and 750 tracked keywords. Its limits are one manager seat and no self-serve tier between 10 and 30 projects.

Choose Ahrefs Lite when the data set and the unverified-ownership project term are the reason the agency uses Ahrefs. At $129 per month or $1,290 per year it is the second-lowest annual total in this comparison, and the ownership term is genuinely useful for prospect research and for clients who control their own DNS. The case for staying is quality and access, not price or allowance.

Choose Semrush SEO when the research workflow is the reason for leaving Ahrefs. At $117.33 per month annually it costs $117.96 more per year than Ahrefs Lite for the same five-property ceiling and a smaller daily keyword allowance, so the premium has to be buying research depth the team actually uses. AI visibility sits one tier up, at Starter and $1,982.04 per year.

Choose Moz Pro Medium when a second seat matters more than the allowance. At $143 per month annually it is the most expensive plan here at $28.60 per client, but it includes two users, which the other entry plans do not. An agency that would otherwise pay for a seat on two platforms should price that inclusion properly rather than dismissing Moz on the headline figure.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Ahrefs alternative for a small agency?

SE Ranking Core is the strongest Ahrefs alternative at the entry price. It costs the same $129 per month on monthly billing as Ahrefs Lite, publishes 10 projects against five, and tracks 2,000 keywords per day against 750. On annual billing it is $103.20 per month, which is $1,238.40 across a year, $51.60 less than Ahrefs Lite and $20.64 per client across five clients.

Which Ahrefs alternative is cheapest?

Moz Pro Standard is the cheapest single plan at $79 per month when paid yearly, or $948 across a year, but it publishes only three sites and one user, so it cannot serve a five-client agency. The cheapest plan that can hold five clients is SE Ranking Core at $1,238.40 per year, followed by Ahrefs Lite at $1,290, Semrush SEO at $1,407.96 and Moz Pro Medium at $1,716.

Is SE Ranking cheaper than Ahrefs?

On monthly billing they are the same at $129 per month. On annual billing SE Ranking Core is $103.20 per month against Ahrefs Lite's $108 per month displayed against a $1,290 annual charge, which makes SE Ranking $51.60 cheaper across the year. SE Ranking also publishes 10 projects and 2,000 keywords per day where Ahrefs Lite publishes five projects and 750 tracked keywords.

Is Semrush a good Ahrefs alternative?

Semrush is a good alternative when the research workflow is the reason for the move rather than the price. Semrush SEO costs $117.33 per month annually, or $1,407.96 per year, which is $117.96 more than Ahrefs Lite for the same five-website ceiling and a smaller daily keyword allowance of 500. AI visibility sits in Starter at $165.17 per month annually, or $1,982.04 per year.

How much do Ahrefs alternatives cost for five clients?

Across five clients, SE Ranking Core is $25.80 per client monthly or $20.64 annually, Ahrefs Lite is $25.80 monthly or $21.60 annually, Semrush SEO is $27.80 monthly or $23.47 annually, and Moz Pro Medium is $35.80 monthly or $28.60 annually. Those figures exclude extra seats, add-ons and overages.

Does Ahrefs track projects without verifying ownership?

Yes. Ahrefs publishes unverified-ownership projects, and Lite includes five of them, with unlimited verified-ownership projects on the full plan. That term is useful for prospect research and for clients who control their own DNS. Other vendors in this comparison publish project counts in different terms, so the requirement should be confirmed for the specific workload before switching.

What does a five-person agency pay on each platform?

SE Ranking Core with four extra seats at $16 is $193 per month, or $2,316 per year. Semrush SEO with four additional users from $45 is a planning floor of $297.33 per month, or $3,567.96 per year. Moz Pro Large includes three users, so two extra seats at $49 make $337 per month, or $4,044 per year. Ahrefs requires Standard with four annual seats at $600, making $4,890 per year.

Is there a free way to replace Ahrefs?

Moz publishes free standalone Domain Analysis, Keyword Explorer and Link Explorer tools and a trial on Medium, and SE Ranking publishes a 14-day trial with no credit card covering 10 projects, 750 tracked keywords per day and 20 AI prompts per day. Neither is a free multi-client delivery plan, and both should be treated as evaluation routes rather than replacements.
